Nearby Nuclear Facilities

Postby Scott L » Tue Mar 31, 2015 8:52 pm

Not something you think about -- until you hear them testing the sirens for the first time. Almost always those tests are on Wednesdays at 11:50am. The sires are mounted on poles and rotate so the siren is load and soft on a steady cycle as the directional siren spins on the pole.

Mt. Holly has two nearby nuclear power plants:

Siren Test schedule:

(Note: At least once they tested on a non-published date. There was announcement in the morning news -- but then you'd have to watch the news to know that.)

If you live in the 10-mile area, Gaston County will give you free special pills to keep in your home that could help in the event of a nuclear disaster:

Your local friendly fire department can answer questions you might have about this.

There is a service that will notify you of disasters and other urgent matters via text message and e-mail:

Other sirens you may hear in Mount Holly:

There is a siren for the Mountain Island Dam:

There is a siren for the East Gaston fire department:

Mount Holly Fire Department reportedly has a siren. One seems to be visible installed at the Catawba location. (Unclear if it's ever sounded or if that one or any others might be used for any particular policy/reason. One citizen reported hearing it recently.)
